“Polyphonic Verses” of Eka Chabashvili were written in 2002, for four actors of a drama theatre.

This work is an example of syncretic art where the leading poetic text is organised  by the compositional structure of specific music forms (prelude, chorale, passacaglia, fugue). Also, the author wants to highlight sonority and musicality of the spoken language (method of alliteration, even words are selected according to their specific musical sonority. For example, in “Fugue”, IV part is focused on the sonority of sounds  “T” “trtoda khelebze nazi titebi” (gentle fingers were (h-i wavSale)   trembling on the hands).

The work is based on the author’s text, however there are used quotations from the Georgian writers of XIX century, from David Guramishvili’s poem “Fate of Qartli” and Sulkhan Saba Orbeliani’s fables “Wisdom of Lies”.

In the “Prelude”, the first part of the “Polyphonic Verses”, author describes a world on the edge of destruction.

Second part “Chorale” is showing a protest of a “small person” against violence (“You came as a thief, and deceiving me badly” David Guamishvili).

In the third part “Passacaglia” there is used a quote from Sulkhan Saba Orbeliani “Admonition for Kings”, where rules of behavior for the chosen by the people (governors) are given (God loves three from the kings: tranquility, humbleness and kindness. God will praise three from the kings: fair justice, charity and love of everybody”, etc.).

As for the last, IV part, “Fugue” is dedicated to the life of every human being, because the life is fragile and needs care, because it is a trembling finger of the whole universe and each destroyed life will hurt it.
